This is the first MkLinux release for Apple Power Macintosh computers.
Developer Release version 1, from May 1996.
Since this is the first release version the documentation states many times that things are "a work in progress". I'm sure later versions may be more stable, but since this was not available online I am preserving it here.
The "Readme First" and "How to install MkLinux" documents are extracted from the CD image and are made available as separate downloads so they can be referenced easily. They are in .RTF and .PDF format. The CD contains the original SimpleText (similar to .TXT) files. The Read me files contain important installation notes, known problems, and system compatibility information.
This disc was ripped via ImBurn on a Windows system. It mounts fine in a vintage Macintosh emulator like SheepShaver. Check out this archived mklinux.Apple.com page for more information about MkLinux for the Power Macintosh.
From the installation notes:
"Please remember that this is a work in progress. Updates and
news are available at our web site: www.mklinux.apple.com. You
are strongly encouraged to check the web site for notes, bug fixes,
updates, etc BEFORE you begin the installation process.
To install MkLinux on a Power Macintosh 6100, 7100, 8100,
PowerComputing 100, or 120 (other Nubs based PowerPC
systems may work but we haven't tested on any other systems yet
... check the web site for updates) you must have at least 16 meg
of RAM in your computer and 400 MB of disk available.
MkLinux uses its own filesystem format and your disk must be partitioned
properly in order to install and use MkLinux. Unfortunately, for this
developer release, this is a manual process that must be performed
before you begin the actual installation."
From the Readme First document:
"Supported Systems:
This version of MkLinux has been booted and run on the following
types of systems:
Power Macintosh 6100
Power Macintosh 7100/66, 7100/80
Power Macintosh 8100/80, 8100/100, 8100/110 PowerComputing 100 & 120
Power PC 603/604 are not supported"
